Salford City Council to host three events for Digital Leaders week

Salford City Council was the winner of Digital Council of the Year 2018 and overall DL100 winner (Digital Leaders) last year

Salford City Council will be hosting three events showcasing its success during this year’s Digital Leaders week, termed as the most inspirational week in the digital transformation calendar.

Digital Leaders week will be running from Monday 17 to Friday 21 June 2019 with over 230 events for leaders across the UK. The event will offer free access to best practice and innovative ideas.

Digital Leaders Week gives those leaders born before the 1990s the skills and knowledge required to naturalise from ‘digital immigrants’ to ‘digital natives’; as well as ensure the UK tech industry remains at the forefront of global digital transformation.

Salford City Council showcasing success

First in Salford, at 9 am Monday 17 June, is a Digital Salford Discovery session at Salford Civic Centre, Swinton. Guests will hear from Debbie Brown, Director of Service Reform and Steven Fry, Head of Customer and Digital Services and teams involved in a range of digital projects. These range from how the council is improving customer contact to making services quicker, easier and better, introducing a chatbot and enabling staff to work smarter.

From 1.30 pm to 3 pm on Monday 17 June, Salford’s Chief Digital Officer Jon Corner will host a session on Salford Smart City – Salford’s ambition for a connected city. Jon will be joined at The Landing by key commercial partners from Arup and Barclays to Deloitte for a roundtable conversation about the benefits that 5G can bring for public services.

Finally, on Tuesday 18 June, from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm, the council will be hosting a livestream event – Salford’s Digital You – the life changing impact of digital inclusion. Join in online to hear about the challenges and successes of the council’s groundbreaking digital inclusion project for Salford residents.

DL100 list 2018

Salford City Council was awarded first place on the DL100 List and Overall Winner in 2018. It was also named Joint Digital Council of the Year along with Birmingham City. Wigan Council won the Digital Inclusion and Skills Initiative of the Year for its pioneering iDEA scheme that gives learners the opportunity to broaden their understanding of digital and to gain basic skills using online modules.

A digital revolution was launched in Salford in January that year with the start of the landmark project Digital You, which aimed to help 8,000 of the most digitally excluded residents – from older residents to homeless people –  to get online by 2020.

The council teamed up with Good Things Foundation, the UK’s leading digital and social inclusion charity, and private sector partners including Barclays, Lloyds Bank and TalkTalk to achieve this. The work was underpinned by a growing army of digital champions, and the council had its own Digital Eagles to develop new skills within its workforce.

This digital drive included building up a network of community venues in the city that supported residents with face-to-face, informal support to boost local technology skills.

The council showed its commitment to becoming a Digital City in the appointment of a Chief Digital Officer, Jon Corner, to drive the changes needed to make Salford one of the world’s most attractive cities for digital enterprise.
