HMRC appoints new director general of customer strategy and tax design

Ruth Stanier has been named as the new director general of customer strategy and tax design at HMRC, takes over from the interim director general David Richardson.

Prior to her appointment, Stanier served as the director for customs and indirect tax. She has also led different departments on a range of policy work, including the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Department for Transport and the Department of Health.

Stanier said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to lead customer strategy and tax design and join HMRC’s Executive Committee. I know first-hand what important work our group does every day to help create the best possible tax, customs and payment systems for the UK. HMRC’s work to raise revenue to fund vital public services is hugely motivating to me, and my decision in 2016 to join the department was definitely one of the best I ever made.”

Sunderland City Council appoint Patrick Melia as new chief executive

Sunderland City Council has brought Patrick Melia on board to replace Irene Lucas as its new chief executive, effective from August 2018. Melia currently serves as the chief executive of the North Tyneside Council, where he has held a number of senior roles.

Commenting on his appointment Melia said: “I’m very proud to have been given this opportunity to join Sunderland City Council and the city. Everyone knows Sunderland is a very dynamic and growing city that has a strong sense of community. I’ve watched the changes in Sunderland from the sidelines and I’m looking forward to now joining the team.”

Surrey County Council appoints director for customer, digital & transformation

Surrey County Council has appointed Michael Coughlin as executive director for customer, digital & transformation. Coughlin had previously served as the chief executive of Reading and Crawley Borough Councils and as an executive director at the Local Government Association.

Speaking about the appointments, Surrey County Council Leader David Hodge said: “It is fantastic news Michael will join our senior management team on a permanent basis. This is a crucial time for local government and we are now looking to radically change the way we serve the people of Surrey.”

North Lanarkshire Council appoints new chief executive

Des Murray is to replace Paul Jukes as the new chief executive officer at North Lanarkshire Council. He currently serves as the assistant chief executive for enterprise and housing. Prior to joining North Lanarkshire Council, Murray previously worked for the Strathclyde Regional Council and South Lanarkshire Council.

Commenting on his appointment, Murray said: “It’s a huge privilege to work for a council with the ambitions of North Lanarkshire, and I’m immensely excited about the prospect of leading the organisation for the benefit of the communities we serve.”
