Kent gets funding for ‘digital playgrounds’

Money will enable Kent Council to use innovation and technology to help children learn and develop their digital skills

Kent’s libraries have secured funding of more than £104,000 from Arts Council England to create technological and innovative spaces for children living in disadvantaged areas.

The ‘Digital Playground’ initiative was presented to Arts Council England by KCC’s Libraries, Registration and Archives service as a way to help children to explore their creativity through the use of technology, with activities including robotic modelling, digital image making and coding.

Kent was one of just 30 library services across the country to be successful in securing the funding.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Community Services Mike Hill said: “We are delighted and excited to have secured this funding from Arts Council England, which will enable us to run the Digital Playground initiative.

“Modern libraries now offer so much more than books; this money will enable us to use innovation and technology to help children learn and develop their digital skills in new ways.”

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has allocated a total of £3.9m from the Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation fund to the 30 successful libraries across the UK. The fund aims to provide more opportunities to disadvantaged communities to access innovation and technology.
