According to an independent study, 90% of organisations will be using data analytics by 2020, despite obstacles of data silos, security and lack of alignment.

Digital transformation firm Atos commissioned a study conducted by Forrester Consulting to analyse the level of Data Analytics adoption across organisations worldwide. It reveals that 40% of those surveyed are already using data analytics in key business functions, with 23% planning to implement it within the next 12 months.

This is despite a third of organisations stating several barriers to adoption; 44% of respondents see the increase in the variety of non-structured data types as a significant challenge, while 35% are concerned about traditional siloed data practices and the lack of alignment between IT and other functions within an organisation.

However, most organisations are taking action to remedy this with the majority of those interviewed highlighting the need to improve IT’s relationship with other departments (71%) and reorganise IT to better align with the whole organisation (66%).

The research examined the ambitions and priorities of eleven industry sectors. In the utility sector, for example, data analytics is seen as a pre-requisite in the development of smart grids.

Amongst its research findings, Forrester highlighted the need for organisations to be rigorous in setting clear and quantifiable goals in all data analytics initiatives: this change is as much about process and culture as it is about technology.
