Agilisys, the digital technology specialist for the public sector, is marking National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2017) by recognising the positive impact apprenticeships and traineeships have on individuals, businesses and the local communities in which it operates.
Formed in 1998 and employing almost 1,500 members of staff, Agilisys has been helping to improve public services for millions of citizens for over 15 years and is one of the largest employee-owned businesses in the UK.
With the public sector facing the challenge of up-skilling existing staff and attracting the talent to drive-long term digital transformation, Agilisys was recently commended by the Sunday Times Top Track 250 for its approach in tackling one of the country’s most pressing problems; ensuring all young people have the right skills in order to enter the workplace.
Since 2012, Agilisys has worked in partnership with Arch Apprentices to successfully place over 1,000 apprentices across the UK.
Steven Beard, Agilisys chief executive, explains: “Agilisys has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities for public sector organisations on their digital journey, including how to harness and develop the right skills and leadership culture to achieve a successful digital transformation.
“We work closely with councils to improve their in-house digital skills, having placed over 200 digital apprentices in local authorities across the UK; one way in which we’re expanding the country’s capacity to make the most of digital technology.
“This year’s National Apprenticeship Week acts as an important reminder to prepare for the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, which is a huge opportunity for local authorities looking to turbocharge their workforce with the digital and IT skills they need to help them on their transformation journey.”
Beard, who 25 years ago trained as an apprentice himself, added: “Apprenticeships open up opportunities to break into exciting and rewarding careers in emerging and growing industries. They also help to bridge the gap between young people – who might otherwise be lost in the system – with employers who need a new mind set.”
One of those with a new mind set is Joe Izatt, aged 18 from Colchester in Essex, who started his Digital Communications apprenticeship with Agilisys in 2015 aged 17 years old and very quickly became a core member of the Marketing Communications team.
Izatt explained: “My apprenticeship has allowed me to learn about the importance of professionalism in the workplace, understand how to enhance and make the most of my own opportunities at work and most notably I have grown in confidence.”
