Council joins forces with charity to launch online services for disabled

Hillingdon Council has teamed up with DisabledGo to launch a free online service for people with disabilities; offering disability information for more than 1000 venues across the London borough

Hillingdon Council has teamed up with DisabledGo to launch a free online service for people with disabilities; offering disability information for more than 1000 venues across the London borough.

The 2011 Census in Hillingdon identified that there were 37,850 people in the borough who considered that their day-to-day activities were limited a little or a lot by a disability or limiting long-term illness.

The council believes that residents should have fair and equal access to services, and wants people from all backgrounds to feel a strong sense of pride and belonging to their community in Hillingdon.

The online service includes information on lighting, colour contrast, signage and background noise, and every venue has been visited and assessed by a trained surveyor.

Philip Corthorne, Cabinet Member for Social Services, Housing, Health and Wellbeing said: “Hillingdon Council promotes diversity and equality throughout the borough, and we have partnered with DisabledGo so that our residents can easily find access information and useful guides to local shops, leisure and entertainment facilities and restaurants.

“This free online guide provides information on accessibility for everything from parking to toilets for more than 1000 venues across the borough; helping people to get out and about more easily.”

Anna Nelson, Executive Director of DisabledGo, said: “We are thrilled to launch the Hillingdon Accessibility Checker. Disability and carers organisations from across the borough have been involved throughout, along with individual disabled people and carers.

“The project would not have been possible without the vision and commitment of the council. I am confident the service will make a real difference, enabling residents and visitors to access more of what Hillingdon has to offer.”
