Government backs scheme to ensure more people have basic IT skills

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a government-backed free training and job placement programme for the UK that it’s hoped will benefit around 1,000 young adults as well as veterans, reservists and their spouses.

The program, launched in partnership with the charity The Prince’s Trust, Ministry of Defence and QA Consulting, aims to initially help people improve their technical skills and find IT-related work, regardless of their experience.

According to the re:Start website, participants will learn how to architect, design, and develop cloud-based applications using AWS. They’ll also learn how to build applications using languages like Python.

In addition to receiving the technical skills from AWS certified instructors, a partnership with The Prince’s Trust’s ‘Get into Technology’ programme will support students with mentoring, soft work skills and help with job applications such as CV writing and interview skills.

“AWS re:Start provides a platform from which individuals, no matter what their background, will be able to launch a new career and build a future for themselves in technology,” said Gavin Jackson, UK managing director at AWS. “We need to take steps now to excite and educate and encourage our children to want to learn more about technology and we’re all tremendously excited about the prospects for this programme.”
