Rural broadband project roll-out reaches halfway point

Rural fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband supplier Gigaclear has reached the halfway point in its ultrafast roll-out of services across the Cotswolds

Rural fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband supplier Gigaclear has reached the halfway point in its ultrafast roll-out of services across the Cotswolds.

Delivered via Gloucestershire and Herefordshire councils’ Fastershire Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, the future-proof pure fibre network has been installed directly at more than to 3,000 homes and businesses. The network, which has been installed using over 182 miles of fibre cable so far, will give residents and businesses broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps (1000Mbps), up to 30 times faster than the UK average.

From local schools where pupils now have access to the most up to date learning resources, to local pubs where visitors can download a full length HD film quicker than the time it takes to pull a pint of stout, the service from Gigaclear has already changed the lives and businesses of many in the area.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Fastershire’s partnership with Gigaclear is making progress in the Cotswolds. The rollout of ultrafast broadband is already bringing considerable benefits residents and businesses and is well on target to complete by summer 2017.”

First project

Fastershire appointed Gigaclear as delivery partner for this phase in June, and the rollout budget includes £3m from the Fastershire project and £7m from Gigaclear. It was the first investment by a national fibre broadband project to be awarded to any other bidder than BT in the UK.

Joe Frost, Business Development Director at Gigaclear, said: “The pure fibre network is transforming rural communities, giving them the best broadband connection available. We’re now on the home straight for completing the project on time and on budget and are looking forward to thousands more properties being connected by the end of 2017.”

Phase 1 of the Fastershire project, in partnership with BT, has already delivered faster broadband to over 14,000 premises in the Cotswolds area, and more than 50,000 homes and businesses in Gloucestershire can now benefit from improved broadband speeds.

The overall rollout schedule for Fastershire’s Phase 2, area 1 broadband rollout in the Cotswolds and the rest of the project area is available at www.fastershire.com/phase2.
