DWP to recruit chief data officer

New recruit expected to lead the department’s plans to design and implement a data platform

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is to recruit a chief data officer (CDO) to lead the department’s plans to design and implement a data platform.

DWP says the new recruit – who will take home an annual salary in the region of £130,000 – will report to Mayank Prakash, the department’s chief digital and information officer.

According to the job description, it will involve “leading agile teams of 500 data scientists, data architects, data analysts, statisticians, data developers and engineers”, as the department works to improve intelligent use of data.

In a statement contained in the information pack available alongside the job advertisement, Prakash said: “Data driven intelligence is absolutely integral to our future plans. We exchange millions of data records every day, and are already seeing how data can improve outcomes,” he said.

“We look forward to a CDO leading our plans to design and deliver a data platform starting from user research, embedding dynamic real-time visualisation, unlocking data and reliable statistics through open APIs, ingesting data through large scale data engineering, as well as using machine learning and artificial intelligence to automate decisions.”

DWP’s former director of digital transformation, Kevin Cunnington, recently left the department taking on a role as head of the Government Digital Service (GDS).
