Westminster City Council’s deployment of RFID EPermits, the Smart Parking solution that helps to eliminate misuse of resident disabled parking bays, has won the Innovation in Technology category at the 2016 Real IT Awards.

The winning project saw resident disabled drivers issued with electronic permits, known as EPermits or RFID tags, which communicate with SmartEye sensors in the road. Should a car without a tag park in a disabled bay with a sensor illegally, nearby traffic marshals are alerted so that they can attend the site and ask the driver to move on or issue a fine as a last resort.

The Real IT Awards reflect the growing contribution IT makes to a business as it meets challenges through sheer innovation, technical expertise and accomplished delivery.

With many entrants coming from FTSE 250 companies, Westminster City Council and Smart Parking beat off competition from the Met Office, Virgin Media and global water & natural resources firm MWH Global, with the accolade underlining the strengths and benefits of the technology and the project.
