How going digital made Wigan a smarter town

By embracing digital, Wigan Council could provide tailored services to its residents, creating a cleaner, happier community. Discover how at our exclusive webinar on 26th May.

The Local Government Chronicle Awards recently honoured Wigan Council for implementing a digital strategy that empowered its residents, naming it Digital Council of the Year.

Under the guidance of the council’s deputy chief executive Alison Mckenzie-Folan, Wigan worked in partnership with Agilisys in implementing the My Account Digital platform that allows residents to contact the council, pay bills and report problems. To date, more than 46,000 people have signed up to MyAccount – a sizeable portion of Wigan’s 320,000 residents.

According to McKenzie-Folan, the MyAccount platform has helped Wigan Council build up a richer picture of its residents and the services they use. In return, the council can provide tailored content, advice and guidance about services, and use that data in the development of new services and to nurture relationships with the community.

“The power of digital is integral to our deal with our residents – an informal agreement promoting self-reliance and community participation – and our aspirations for healthier, cleaner and happier communities,” Mckenzie-Folan wrote in a recent post for Digital Catapult Centre.

To find out more about how going digital can make smarter cities and towns, join us and Alison Mckenzie-Folan at our exclusive webinar, taking place on 26th May at 2.00pm.
