Breakdown of spend on National Cyber Security Programme revealed

From the Spending Review settlements of 2010 and 2013, the National Cyber Security Programme was allocated £860 million to spend over the five years of the Programme.

From the Spending Review settlements of 2010 and 2013, the National Cyber Security Programme was allocated £860 million to spend over the five years of the Programme.

The report states that through rigorous financial management, as recognised by the Major Projects Authority and National Audit Office, spend came within one per cent of this budget.

The breakdown of spend is as follows:

  • £441.8m: National Sovereign capability to detect and defeat high end threats
  • £117.0m: Law enforcement and combating cyber crime
  • £80.6m: Support to full spectrum effects capability
  • £61.1m: Private sector engagement and awareness
  • £39.6m: Improving the resilience of the Public Sector Network
  • £40.4m: Mainstreaming cyber throughout defence
  • £32.8m: Education and skills
  • £24.4m: Incident management/response and trend analysis
  • £8.1m: International engagement and capacity building
  • £7.8m: Programme management, coordination, and policy

Spend has steadily increased over the last five years. The government spent £100m on cyber security in 2011/12, rising to £150m in 2012/13 and £175m in 2013/14. Around £200m was spent in each of the past two years.
