LocalGov Digital has published the Local Government Digital Service Standard following a period of consultation.

LocalGov Digital has published the Local Government Digital Service Standard following a period of consultation.

The Standard suggests a common approach for local authorities to deliver excellent quality, user-centred, value for money digital services.

Suggestions in the Standard include advice on building ‘agile, iterative and user-centred’ services based on methods set out in the Government Service Design Manual. Making source code and service data open and reusable under appropriate licences is suggested, as are a number of evaluation tools and systems that can be used to record and measure service levels.

 

Feedback

Created over the past two months, over 60 councils have had input into the Standard, including at a workshop at the Government Digital Service on 5 February, and a public consultation on a draft Standard between 29 February and 19 March. The Standard Steering Group met on 6 April and based on feedback in the consultation, agreed the Standard.

“This is a big step forward for the way local government delivers digital,” commented LocalGov Digital vice-chair Phil Rumens. “Not only will it help create better services, it will enable this to happen in a more joined up way.”

Over the next few months LocalGov Digital will be forming regional peer networks to support councils in adopting the Standard and publishing guidance on how best to implement each of the 15 points it contains. A Digital Service Standard Summit will be held in September 2016.
