Tech giants want snoopers’ charter changes

Some of the biggest names in tech have outlined their concerns regarding the controversial Investigatory Powers Bill, saying that further amendments should be made before it becomes law.

Some of the biggest names in tech have outlined their concerns regarding the controversial Investigatory Powers Bill, saying that further amendments should be made before it becomes law.

In a detailed written submission Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo reiterated their previously voiced concerns. After the bill passed its second reading earlier this month and the Investigatory Powers Public Bill Committee is due to examine the bill line by line in April, ahead of a 5 May deadline.

 

Far-reaching implications

In the written submission the major tech firms said: “As we made clear in our evidence to the joint committee, the actions the UK government takes here could have far-reaching implications – for British citizens, our users and for the future of the global technology industry.

“Decisions made today about UK legislation will set precedents which may be copied elsewhere and have wider ramifications for all parties, both in the UK and overseas,” the tech firms said.
