HSCIC appoints director of data science

Healthcare informatics specialist Daniel Ray has been named as the new director of data science at the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Healthcare informatics specialist Daniel Ray has been named as the new director of data science at the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Ray, will take up his post on 14 March and heads up the Centre of Excellence for Big Data and Data Science, which the HSCIC is setting up along with the Department of Health and the Cabinet Office.

The Centre of Excellence has been initiated following the formation of the government’s Data Science Programme in 2014, which aimed to help Downing Street make better use of data science in policy-making and service delivery.

Experience

Ray was formerly director of informatics at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, where he co-founded the university’s Quality and Outcomes Research Unit. He is also an honorary professor at the FARR Institute of Health Informatics Research, and was chair of the Health CIO Network from 2014-15.

He said his work will include: “Further unlocking national health datasets to help underpin evidence based policy making, along with being able to create an enabling secure environment to catapult world class research on the unique data holding the NHS generates.”

Ray took up a new role as director of data strategy at Method Analytics in January 2016, but will be leaving that role to work at the HSCIC.
