Draft of local government digital standard set to be published

A draft digital standard for transactional services in local government is set to be released in the next few days.

A draft digital standard for transactional services in local government is set to be released in the next few days.

LocalGov Digital, hopes to have the new standard, which will work alongside the existing standard covering content, will be completed as quickly as next month.

Earlier this month LocalGov Digital a ran an event in London at GDS. Officers from over 30 councils attended to hear talks by members of GDS teams involved with Digital by Default Assessments, and to take part in workshop sessions to discuss how the Standard might be adapted for Local government.

Following that meeting work has taken place to draw up a draft standard, with a view to an initial group of councils signing up to produce and procure their digital services according to it.

A spokesperson for LocalGov Digital said the standard, which aims to reduce the varying quality, ease of use and value for money so common across local government digital services, is expected to be similar to the one used by central government.

Cost savings

As well as improving services for users, it’s hoped that the standard will lead to cost savings for councils as consistently high quality services mean more users switch to digital platforms.

LocalGov Digital has said that more than 50 authorities have already expressed an interest in the standard, although it did stress that it is up to each local authority to decide if it is adopted and when.

Last month Phil Rumens, vice chair of digital networking group LocalGov Digital, has called for an extension in the remit of the GDS to work formally with local government.
