First GDS codebar event hailed a success

The Government Digital Service (GDS) recently hosted its first codebar event in its offices in London.

The Government Digital Service (GDS) recently hosted its first codebar event in its offices in London.

Codebar is a tutoring programme that helps women, LGBTQ, and people belonging to underrepresented ethnic groups in tech to learn programming in a safe and collaborative environment and expand their career opportunities.

During these weekly events, experienced developers volunteer their time to help students go through tutorials or build their own project.

A sell-out

The first event of its kind was a sell-out with more than 50 delegates in attendance.

As well as listening to stories about successes and casee studies at GDS, coaches and students were then paired up to go through tutorials or build projects over two hours in a variety of languages, including HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby, and more.

Following positive feedback, GDS has announced that it is to host codebar events every two months, with a larger capacity of 70 attendees.
