Mixed reviews of council websites revealed by survey

A survey by Socitm has revealed how councils measure up when it comes to delivering information about crucial services.

The Better Connected study by the public sector IT association shows that councils are succeeding in helping residents find their nearest rubbish tip, with nearly four out of five (78 per cent) of the local authorities surveyed scored three or four stars. However, they are being found wanting when enabling residents to report missed bin collections online, with just 41% achieving satisfactory ratings.

Structured questionnaire

Socitm used a structured questionnaire to test tip opening times, asking a series of typical user questions. The report named Hampshire, Kent, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire councils as top performers in this area.

The missed bin collection category survey used a similar process, asking questions such as ‘Is there a postcode look-up to find my collection day?’ and ‘Am I provided with a checklist of reasons why my bin might not have been collected prior to starting the reporting process?’ Barnet, Cambridge City, Dover, Flintshire and Wolverhampton were applauded for their performance in this area.

The survey comes after the Local Waste Service Standards project, launched by the Department for Communities and Local Government, said that big savings could be made by managing bin collections digitally.
