Feedback from small businesses who are successfully delivering government projects is helping to make public sector buying more open to SMEs, according to Minister for the Cabinet Office Matt Hancock MP.

On 4th December, Hancock visited public sector digital services provider, dxw to see how the company’s approach has transformed websites for organisations from housing associations and the NHS to UK Trade & Industry and the Government Digital Service.

A notable industry voice
dxw managing director, Harry Metcalfe has been vocal about changing government procurement processes to make it easier for the public sector to benefit from the skills, creativity and agility of SMEs. His #gcloudforever campaign earlier this year led to a significant change in the Digital Services Framework, one of Mr Hancock’s areas of responsibility.

During the visit, Metcalfe showed Mr Hancock the technology behind the Business is Great website – one of his responsibilities in his previous role as Minister of State for Business, Enterprise and Energy – and had a productive conversation about progress in reforming public sector procurement and the challenges that still remain.
Moving forward

On Twitter, Hancock said that he enjoyed meeting the team and seeing how a small business is delivering government contracts.

“We were delighted to show the Minister what we’re doing to make it easier for the public to access services online,” added Metcalfe.

“He was open to suggestions on how to improve the procurement experience for SMEs, and we’re confident that recent procurement reforms will be built upon and further improved in the coming months.”
