Southend enables joined-up social care with software upgrade

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has introduced a new software solution that will help simplify data sharing between the different teams working with young people and their families.

The solution enables information from schools and notes from teams such as educational psychology, Connexions, youth justice or Troubled Families to be viewed in one place, providing a much more holistic picture of the issues affecting a young person’s life.

‘Dramatically reducing’ number of calls

Gareth Richards, senior performance analyst at Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, said: “There are many different agencies working under the Youth Services umbrella in Southend and a young person or their family could be receiving help and support from any number of them.

He added: “The software has dramatically reduced the number of phone calls teams have to make to get the information they need to do their jobs effectively, freeing up time and resources which can be better allocated to action plans that support young people in all areas of their lives.”

An information hub

Using the software an educational psychologist, for example, can – in a few clicks (and with the right authorisation) – quickly see a wealth of information on a young person’s background and circumstances.

This might include their school attendance record, details of any exclusions or post-16 support that has been put in place, as well as information on welfare issues or social services involvement.

Having this broad range of information to hand will help ensure the right support is put in place quickly and enable teams to work together more effectively to target services where they are needed.
