Leeds City Council has partnered with Virgin Media, which will provide a £40 million investment to boost ultrafast broadband rollout in the region.

Under the partnership, 11,000 homes in Middleton are set to be the first in Leeds to receive ultrafast broadband connections.

A total of 80,000 consumers and small business across Leeds and the local area will benefit from ultrafast internet connectivity and as part of the scheme Virgin Media is planning its cabling based on the demand from people registering at virginmedia.com/cablemystreet.

Additionally, it is the primary connectivity provider to the Yorkshire and Humberside Public Services Network, which is delivering public services to over 5 million people in the region.

Leader of Leeds City Council Judith Blake said: “I am delighted that we have secured this investment for the residents of Leeds.

“Access to high speed broadband is the cornerstone of a thriving local economy helping residents connect and businesses to grow.”

Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media chief executive officer, said: “Local authorities have an important role in getting ultrafast broadband to more people, more quickly.

We need more local authorities, like Leeds City Council, to work with us to cut the red tape and secure investment for their residents.”
