Two thirds of public sector employees are uncomfortable using the cloud, according to a survey of 5,000 government and NHS staff, including those in IT departments.
The survey, which was conducted by Dods and sponsored by cloud service company Huddle, claims that security fears are the greatest barrier to public sector cloud adoption, with 92% of respondents expressed concerns at cloud security.
Over 80% of those surveyed felt that the time and effort required to migrate to the cloud is an issue, integrating with existing systems and a lack of technical skills to implement a migration are all concerns for transition to the cloud.
The accompanying white paper to the survey shows that less than half of government departments are confident in using the cloud and a quarter have never used it at all.
“These behaviours are the antithesis of collaboration and efficiency,” commented Alastair Mitchell, co-founder of Huddle.
“If cloud platforms are not trusted or believed to be beneficial, collaboration cannot take place, and so insecure and inefficient approaches to co-operation are filling the void.
“There’s no reluctance to collaborate – it’s just that staff are not yet convinced by the tools being offered to them, making it essential that UK Government provides more education on cloud platforms and their benefits.”
