Worcestershire Trust launches eConsent

A digitised patient consent system has gone live across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to gather evidence of any risks from an operation for a patient before they give medical consent.

A digitised patient consent system has gone live across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in a bid to ensure documentary evidence is collected about the risks surrounding operations before consent is given.

The eConsent system is designed to support clinicians meet the strict General Medical Council Guidelines, which demand that patients are fully informed and warned before granting consent to operations.

The programme has been developed by the trust and commercialised by e-Health Innovations, part of the Wellbeing Software Group.

eConsent provides a template that can be prepopulated with patient details and the risks and benefits of a specific procedure. On completion, the consent form is stored on the trust’s server and becomes part of the patient’s permanent medical record.

Dr Stephen Lake, consultant at the Worcestershire Trust who led the systems rollout, said: ‘”Since inventing and deploying eConsent at this Trust, we have been able to give individual patients much more information about the procedure, including the specific risks and benefits involved.”

He added: “Our view is that we have achieved a solution which is facilitating us in the progress towards becoming a paperless trust.”
