Birmingham council using app for election results

Birmingham council chief executive Mark Rogers said: “Over the last few years our online election updates and results via Twitter have proved extremely popular and we’ve decided to extend that coverage... through WhatsApp."

Birmingham City Council used mobile messaging service WhatsApp to deliver an election update service for local residents during the UK general and local elections.

The town hall reportedly used the app to send out voter information, candidate lists and other election news throughout the day, leading up to the polls closing.

Once the election results were being declared, users could keep track of the results using Twitter’s Periscope app, which broadcast directly from the vote count; these results will then be available later via a YouTube video on Friday.

Those registered to the election apps received an alert on their device when a live declaration was set to be made through the streaming service.

Birmingham returning officer and council chief executive Mark Rogers said: “Over the last few years our online election updates and results via Twitter have proved extremely popular and we’ve decided to extend that coverage to reach a different audience through WhatsApp.

The initial uptake has been encouraging and we’ll assess how this project goes before deciding if WhatsApp could be used for other projects.”
