LGA launches digital council social media hub

The Digital Council online resource includes a step-by-step process from getting started on Twitter and Facebook, to developing a fully formed digital strategy using social media.

The Local Government Association and Comms2point0 have jointly launched ‘Digital Councils’, a social media hub for local government.

Press and communication teams from local authorities can share digital knowledge, expertise and stories to improve the use of social media across councils.

The online resource includes a step-by-step process from getting started on Twitter and Facebook, to developing a fully formed digital strategy using social media.

The LGA intends to work in partnership with councils and individuals at various stages of digital transformation.

Additionally, it includes a ‘mythbuster’ section and hints and tips, which have been, tailored for individual roles in a council, including councillors, press and IT officers.

According to the LGA, the resource will be updated to include current developments and exhibit case studies from authorities and other bodies to provide examples of good practice for local councils.

Councillor David Sparks, chair of the Local Government Association, said: “Many councils have already got to grips with social media and are using it to communicate with their residents about things like bin collections, weather warnings and road closures.

Digital Councils will give council communications teams help and advice as they discuss how to develop their social media presence. Councillors and councils are working at different speeds and this resource will provide a hub so we can work with everyone and learn from each other.

There are thousands of dedicated council staff across the country, who play a vital role in our communities. This guidance is designed to complement and enhance their tireless work, which will ultimately benefit the lives of our residents.”
