The Cabinet Office appoints its first chief digital officer, who will assume the combined responsibilities of chief information officer, chief technology officer and chief digital officer.

Despite the wide range of responsibilities, Conall Bullock will only adopt the title of chief digital officer and the appointment signals the end of a fourth month recruitment process.

He has experience as an IT consultant at his own firm, served as a director at MenCap, head of IT at Jewish Care and Bracknell Forest Homes.

One of the first responsibilities of Bullock will be to introduce an in-house “mini Government Digital Service” at the Cabinet Office.

This will be designed to oversee the development of digital services, technology services like laptops, Wi-Fi and e-mail, shared services such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and mission-critical IT services.

The appointment was unveiled on Twitter by the permanent secretary at the Cabinet Office, Richard Heaton, and GDS chief Mike Bracken tweeted: “Enjoy your new role in Cabinet Officer. Delighted you are here.”

On his LinkedIn profile, Bullock described the new position as leading “the teams responsible for delivering world leading technology and digital initiatives at the heart of government.”
