The government appoints head of the Government Digital Service, Mike Bracken, as its first chief data officer to support transparency in government contracts and data.

Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, announced the decision at a roundtable event championing open data amongst local authorities.

Bracken will continue his role as head of the GDS in conjunction with his new position.

I’m delighted to announce that Mike Bracken, who has spearheaded this government’s digital revolution, will also become the government’s chief data officer,” said Maude.

He is the ideal person to take our already world-leading approach to open data even further, while strengthening data analysis skills in Whitehall,” he added.

In his role as CDO, Bracken will champion the government’s open data access and use policy and utilise open data to improve decision making in the public sector; in addition, he will create a new ‘Government Data Standard’.

Speaking at the same event, Maude outlined governmental plans to improve transparency during the procurement process so that taxpayers can hold the government and suppliers to account as to how their money is spent.

Maude explained, “transparency is an idea whose time has come. Open data helps sharpen accountability, support economic growth and inform choice over public services.”
