New WiFi scheme in Kendal

Kendal town centre is now connected with WiFi, as part of a one year pilot project developed by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC).

Kendal Town Council proposed the idea of free WiFi for the town to encourage people to spend more time in the town centre and is hoped to boost sales on the local high street.

The council is calling for people to test out the new service after it was tested during the Kendal Festival of Food to ensure that it can provide effective coverage, especially at times of peak service demand.

In its current format, customers can use the service for two hours per day with the option to then pay for further use after this time.

Councillor Giles Archibald said: “The improved speed and accessibility of internet in the town centre will create a digital platform where businesses can increase awareness and engage with their customers and provides an enhanced town centre visitor experience.

This is a pilot scheme and the wi-fi is still in a testing phase, so coverage may not be perfect, but we are keen that people should give it a try and give us their views on the service so we know how we can improve.

If the Kendal trial proves successful we will then consider rolling out free wi-fi to other towns in the district.’’
