Superfast broadband for 4,000 Manchester homes

A further 4,000 homes and businesses now have access to superfast broadband in the Greater Manchester area.

A further 4,000 homes and businesses now have access to superfast broadband in the Greater Manchester area.

A partnership between BT and eight councils in the region, the Get Digital Faster Programme, have upgraded from copper wire to fibre optic to deliver speeds of 80Mbps.

The initiative has already provided superfast broadband to 16,000 premises.

By March 2016 it is expected that a further 8,500 home and businesses in Wigan and 6,000 in Tameside will be connected to superfast networks.

Wigan Council’s deputy leader, Councillor David Molyneux, said “this high speed technology can change business and home life for the better.

Work can be done from home or the workplace and this will help to transform the local economy – encouraging businesses to invest in the borough – which is one of our top priorities.”

Tameside Council’s first deputy, Cllr Jim Fitzpatrick, commented, “BT has been busy installing these new cabinets all over the borough, so already, along with our Greater Manchester colleagues we are taking significant steps towards making our county one of the world’s top 20 digital areas by the end of the decade.”

The additions will provide network coverage of 99.4% when across the region, when combined with existing commercial services.

The project has been jointly funded by North West European Regional Development Fund, BT, the Broadband Delivery UK initiative and the local authorities.
