Biggest ever HMRC online self-assessment

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has overseen the largest digital self-assessment for tax returns, with over 10 million tax returns received by the midnight 31st January deadline.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has overseen the largest digital self-assessment for tax returns, with over 10 million tax returns received by the midnight 31st January deadline.

HMRC said that over 85% of the self-assessments were sent online with the services processing nearly 1 million returns within 24 hours of the deadline.

On the deadline day, 95% of all customer enquiries by telephone were answered first time.

Over one million users opted to use the digital only option and received electronic messages instead of traditional paper communications.

HMRC’s Director General of Personal Tax, Ruth Owen, described the results as “record breaking” for the self-assessment scheme as 210,000 users filed their returns on time compared to last year.

Whilst the number of users who filed their tax return on time improved and was well below the 2010 levels of 1.6 million outstanding returns, it is estimated that 890,000 users could be facing fines of £100 for a failure to submit their tax return on time.

Owen warned, “if you’re one of the minority who missed the deadline, you still need to get your tax return to us as soon as possible, to avoid further penalties and interest mounting up”.
