Plymouth has received planning permission for BT to install Wi-Fi transmitters on council lamp posts, marking a key stage of the city’s free Wi-Fi project.

The transmitters are set to be installed immediately as part of preparations for a planned rollout in the Spring across the city.

The installations will add to Plymouth’s existing Wi-Fi network and significantly expand the network coverage.

Plymouth’s outdoor Wi-Fi network is being implemented in partnership with BT at zero cost to local taxpayers as for the use of council lamp posts, BT is providing free network infrastructure and support. Such a scheme is one of relatively few across the country according to Plymouth City Council.

Council Leader Tudor Evans commented, “We are getting even more connected! It’s great for the city, great for visitors and great for business.”

Paul Coles, BT South West regional manager, said: “This is another important step forward for a project, which will make a big contribution to the connectivity of Plymouth.

“We are on track for a major network of free BT Wi-fi hotspots to be up and running across the city in the Spring.

“First class mobile communications, such as free wi-fi, will play a vital role in the future success and prosperity of Plymouth.”
