The government’s Broadband Delivery UK has invested £750,000 into Northern Rail’s trains from Leeds and Bradford to provide free connectivity to commuters.

In a joint project between Northern Rail, Leeds City Council, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority the service is expected to provide rail users with access to 20MB Wi-Fi.

The deal represents the first train-only Wi-Fi project to be funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport through the Broadband Delivery UK initiative.

According to the planning and programmes director for Northern Rail, Rob Warnes, over 100,000 individuals have registered for the trains’ on-board Wi-Fi and the scheme has prompted positive feedback from customers so far, who are pleased with connection speeds.

Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy said: “Providing free Wi-Fi on public transport and in public spaces is just one of the ways we’re boosting connectivity across our cities”.

Councillor James Lewis speaking on behalf of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority: “The SuperConnected Cities programme aims to give access to the latest broadband technologies to everyone – businesses, residents and visitors – across the two cities.”
