150,000 Scottish homes now have fibre-optic broadband

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has welcomed the UK Government’s substantial funding on the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project, on the day it was confirmed that 150,000 homes and businesses in Scotland now have access to fibre broadband.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has welcomed the UK Government’s substantial funding on the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project, on the day it was confirmed that 150,000 homes and businesses in Scotland now have access to fibre broadband.

Broadband is a prime example of cutting edge technology becoming an essential part of everyday life, supporting families, jobs and essential services,” the Scottish secretary said.

Thousands of households and businesses now have internet speeds of up to 80Mbps, which is having a transformational impact on the way people live and work. This includes improving the connectivity between businesses, both home and abroad, reducing business overheads as well as allowing online television access and increased communication in the area.

Of the £1 billion the UK Government is investing in better broadband and mobile infrastructure, £150 million is to support UK cities in their development of a digital infrastructure to attract businesses, investment and an influx of people. A further £150 million has been allocated to improve the quality and coverage of mobile voice and basic data network services.

Mr Carmichael pledged, “this is just the start, the superfast broadband programme sits alongside the UK Government’s work to install free public wi-fi in some of Scotland’s most recognisable public buildings, and the plans we have set out to eliminate poor mobile phone coverage across the UK.”

In addition, as part of the Scottish digital programme, specialist vessels will lay out a core of fibre optic cables for a broadband network that will interconnect the entirety of Scotland.
