More than 90,000 homes and businesses in 18 local authority areas across Scotland will be next to get fibre broadband in the latest phase of the £410 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael welcomed the news, describing it as an important step in connecting communities.

Mr Carmichael said: “From Eyemouth to Stromness it’s great to see superfast broadband continue to be rolled across the length and breadth of Scotland. It’s clear how important broadband is for supporting families, jobs and services and for helping our businesses to expand and grow. Today’s announcement is another important step in ensuring communities across Scotland are connected to superfast broadband.

The UK Government has allocated over £100m – 20% of the Rural Broadband Programme budget – to Scotland to help ensure the widest possible coverage for fast, reliable fibre broadband. The Digital Scotland project is a great example of devolution working for Scottish people. Targeted local projects benefiting from UK Government funding and programme support.”
