G-Cloud cuts IT cost by 50%: Singleton

Tony Singleton spoke about the programmes ability to cut costs by as much as 50% at The Public Sector Show 2014 in London, crediting the pay-as-you-go model and greater cost transparency for its success.

The government’s G-Cloud programme is cutting the cost of IT in half, claims the programme’s director.

Tony Singleton spoke about the programmes ability to cut costs by as much as 50% at The Public Sector Show 2014 in London, crediting the pay-as-you-go model and greater cost transparency for its success.

He also said G-Cloud was quick: “The fastest we have got a contract in place using G-Cloud was three minutes,” he said.

Singleton also said the cloud should be the “first option” when developing new services.

“IT should be bought much more as a commodity rather than negotiating lengthy contracts,” he said. “We don’t need to own servers; we don’t need to own software.”

Around £1.5bn of spend had gone through G-Cloud since it was established in late 2011 – of which central government made up 79% of sales.
