G-Cloud more like ‘shop window’ than marketplace

Over 80 per cent of suppliers have yet to make a sale through the government’s G-Cloud procurement platform, it has emerged.

The framework, designed to allow public sector organisations to buy cloud products and services online, seems like it is performing more like a ‘shop window’ than a market place, according to service users.

Following a freedom of information request submitted to the Cabinet Office by V3, just 181 of the 1,058 suppliers registered with G-Cloud have made sales.

Mark Fenna, head of public sector at firm eGain, said that they his business receives enquiries through G-Cloud without any converting into sales. “Of all the interactions we’ve had so far we’ll probably transact them outside of G-Cloud,” he said.

Kevin Long, UK business development director for data warehousing firm Teradata, believes that the design of the online platform doesn’t lend itself to the complexities of some deals.

He said: “We’re finding people find an entry like ours and then go through traditional ways of finding more information, and go for a more bespoke approach.”
