Superfast broadband reaches another 5,000 rural premises

The government’s ‘Super Switch-on Day’ has seen a further 5,000 homes and businesses in rural areas connected to superfast broadband services.

The government’s ‘Super Switch-on Day’ has seen a further 5,000 homes and businesses in rural areas connected to superfast broadband services. Rural areas across Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent and Medway, Cheshire, the Cotswolds and Shropshire are now connected, but this averages out at a mere few hundred premises per region.

The government’s broadband project has come under fire for being around GBP 200 million over budget. The government is still hoping to deliver superfast broadband to around 95% of the UK by 2017.

Maria Miller, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “We are now witnessing an incredible transformation of superfast broadband in Britain, and we are already well ahead of other major European countries in many respects. We’re determined to ensure that everyone benefits and that broadband is available in the very hardest to reach areas of Britain, making a real difference to people who live in these communities. Today’s ‘switch on’ of cabinets across the country takes us yet another step closer to fulfilling our promise of giving superfast speeds to 95 per cent of Britain by 2017.”
