Francis Maude claims that the UK is a digital world leader

Francis Maude the Cabinet Office minister has claimed that the UK is a world leader in digital services.

Francis Maude the Cabinet Office minister has claimed that the UK is a world leader in digital services.

Speaking at the Cabinet Office to update the media on the government’s digital strategy, Maude said: “GOV.UK is now setting the standard for other governments. It is open source and New Zealand’s government has taken over the source code from Gov.uk…Obamacare launched to universal criticism and a lot of the commentary said ‘why didn’t they do what the British government is doing – the Government Digital Service (GDS) approach’ – they did it the old fashioned way.”

He went on to say: “We’ve gone from being a byword, being crap at this stuff to becoming recognised as a world leader. It is not over yet though, there is a lot more to do.”

The report ‘one year on’ since the government published its digital strategy also shows how the coalition has transformed 25 services across government. The Student Loans Company has live elements, 15 services are in beta and six in alpha.

In addition two new actions will be included in the strategy. These are working on increased digital inclusion and syndicating information and transactions to enable third parties to deliver new services for their own users.
