Skills minister announces funding to improve broadband infrastructure in colleges

The government has announced that it will invest in a programme to improve broadband infrastructure at further education colleges.

The government has announced that it will invest in a programme to improve broadband infrastructure at further education colleges.

Matthew Hancock, skills minister, said that funding will be provided for colleges to install second broadband connections. It is hoped that the move will enable more effective use of existing infrastructure, including bandwidth upgrades.  Currently 8 out of 10 colleges depend on single connections for operational and teaching needs, including cloud-based applications and online business.

Hancock said: “It’s easy to imagine what happens if that connection goes down, that’s why I’m allocating extra funds to allow colleges to install a second broadband connection – giving them greater ability to operate and support their students with the latest technology 24/7.”

Jisc, an organisation that promotes the use of digital technologies in education, will offer advice to colleges on to get the most out of existing bandwidth.
