Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust abandons Meditech EPR system

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s electronic patient records (EPR) system, which cost GBP 21 million and only went live last year, is to be scrapped following a ‘catalogue of failure.’

The Trust abandoned the National Programme for IT (NpfIT) electronic patient records system in 2009 and procured the Meditech 6.0 system from Medical Information Technology instead in a bid to save cash. However, the system went live two years late and encountered a ream of problems including: difficulties with booking patient appointments, a lack of consultation with clinical staff leading to staff reverting to the previous EPR system, and complaints regarding the level of data input that was required.

According to a draft informatics strategy report released last week, “Clinicians weren’t involved in the testing and so, at go-live, the full impact of EPR use on clinical efficiency and throughput added to the problems. Lack of clinical engagement during the implementation process has left a significant legacy of distrust and negativity towards ‘the product’ as opposed to ‘the vision’.”

The Trust is now looking to implement a new best-of-breed approach. While a number of departments will retain Meditech software, the level of usage will be dropped.

City Hospitals Sunderland Foundation Trust has delayed implementation of Meditech 6.0 following the failings at Rotherham.
