NHS to get Choose and Book online booking system

IT consultancy BJSS has been selected by the NHS to provide an e-Referral Service to replace the current Choose and Book system, reports governmentcomputing.com.  The new service is being developed under plans to have a paperless NHS by 2018. It is thought that this will make it easier for patients to do business with the NHS.

Choose and Book is an online booking system which allows NHS staff and patients to select their preferred healthcare provider, date and time to make an appointments. During the lifetime of the system it has processed more than 40 million referrals.

The first step to develop the new system will be replicating the existing Choose and Book functionality to support the move to the new NHS e-Referral Service. This will include removing ‘lock in’ to current proprietary software within the current platform and moving to a more flexible open platform. The new system will also have a greater capability to support extra professional users, and will incorporate application programming interfaces to allow the new service to integrate with other systems.

Mike Buck, BJSS public sector practice lead, said: “We’re really pleased to have been selected to work with HSCIC on another high-profile project. We will be working closely with the NHS team to deliver a cost-effective solution using open source and agile techniques.”
