GDS tool helps FCO identify dangerous areas for tourists

The Government Digital Service (GDS) has released a tool to enable Foreign Office civil servants to identify dangerous areas for British tourists.

The Government Digital Service (GDS) has released a tool to enable Foreign Office civil servants to identify dangerous areas for British tourists.

The tool uses data from the Foreign Office’s travel advice pages and presents a map which shows the frequency with which each country’s ‘Contact Foreign Travel Advice Team’ page is visited, in a bid to highlight concerns that British citizens may have with a country. The tool is expected to help the FCO maintain the pages and keep them up to date, as well as highlighting potential problems for civil servants.

The GDS’s website previewed an early version of the system, and GDS data scientist Daniel Collins claimed that data about different countries “naturally lends itself to a map-based approach”. He went on to say: “One can immediately get a feel for trends across the world and get an instant indication of the causal link between news events and traffic.”
