According to a survey of European public sector leaders commissioned by imaging and document management firm, Ricoh Europe, in the future successful public sector chief information officers (CIOs) will need a background in marketing as well as a solid understanding of technology. The survey also found that a successful CIO would also possess business-critical process expertise.

The survey also claimed that public sector CIOs are driven to bring about improvements in key areas such as financial management, customer engagement and data/business intelligence. Despite this however, only 9% of public sector CIOs are able to change business-critical processes and just 29% consider change management as a necessary attribute. Overall the study claimed that around 68% of European public sector organisations are not set for digital transformation.

The study was conducted by Coleman Parkes Research during May and June 2013 across 14 European nations.
