Bristol City Council helps the elderly learn online skills via iPads

A course showed the elderly citizens aged 62 years and above how to use iPads, navigate the internet, shop online, set up calendars and Skype with friends.

As part of the ‘Get IT Together – Bristol’ programme, a scheme run by Citizens Online, BT and Bristol City Council, a seven week beginners iPads course was held at Charities Day Centre in Henbury during June and July 2013. The course showed the elderly citizens aged 62 years and above how to use iPads, navigate the internet, shop online, set up calendars and Skype with friends.

The course was attended by nine people who had never used a tablet before and two of whom had never used a computer before.

As a result of the course, five of them have now got their own iPad either through buying them at a reduced rate from the Dolphin Society or purchasing them themselves.

Ivor was one of the learners who took the course to keep up with his three grandchildren who enjoy using computers. He commented “I have been using the iPads to send emails, find directions, read books and set up a library.”

iPads for the course were loaned by the Dolphon Society which aims to support independent living for the elderly.
