Vodafone UK CIO to become HMRC's new Chief Digital and Information Officer

Mark Dearnley, CIO of Vodafone UK, has been appointed as the new Chief Digital and Information Officer of HMRC.

Mark Dearnley, CIO of Vodafone UK, has been appointed as the new Chief Digital and Information Officer of HMRC. Dearnley will begin his new role in September and will take control of HMRC’s GBP 200 million digitisation programme. He will work to accelerate the implementation of online services for taxpayers and will lead the department’s physical, personnel and information security.

Dearnley had previously held IT roles at other telecoms companies, and while at Vodafone led the overhaul of Vodafone’s IT systems to introduce cloud technology. “I have spent my entire career in the private sector, mostly in customer-facing businesses,” said Dearnley. “But no private business in the UK can match the customer base, scale or complexity of HMRC, which makes this role irresistible.”

According the HMRC, up to two million people and five million small businesses will be able to pay their taxes online by April 2013. The department believes that its digital agenda will cut costs by around GBP 51 million by 2016.

David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said of Dearnley’s move that it “is evidence that the government has the cutting edge-challenges that can attract the very best leaders in IT to public service.”
