Council websites should be platforms not destinations, says expert

Speaking at the Building Perfect Council Websites conference, Google’s geospatial technologist, Ed Parsons, has said that council websites should be treated as platforms rather than destinations, as has traditionally been the case.

At the event, hosted by Socitm, Parsons said he believes that “In the modern world of social media, the ‘if you build it, they will come’ approach doesn’t actually work… Councils must think about how they share information, by creating an ecosystem of online information and service spread across all available online networks”, reported ukauthority.com.

He also said that local authorities should use all possible online channels, which do not have to be under their control, such as hyperlocal websites run by communities and digital mapping services.

The map of the future is not a map – it is contextualised information presented to you based on your location,” he said, adding that “Every map when I log on will be specific to me – increasingly, customisation will be more important, as maps we create will be task-specific.”
