Govt says 66% of superfast broadband projects have commenced

Following criticism from NAO regarding the government’s scheme to provide superfast broadband to 90% of the UK, the government has said that two-thirds of its broadband projects are underway with 29 local authorities, the most recent one being signed with BT in Dorset for £32 million. This means that 60,000 new premises around the country now have access to superfast services, it claims.

The government added that 15 more projects will soon be finalised.

According to communications minister Ed Vaizey, “We are witnessing a historic transformation in the nation’s broadband, and we are already well ahead of other major European countries in many respects.

“The work we are now doing will reinforce the UK’s position as a leading digital economy, be a major driver of local jobs and national growth, and help us win the global race.”
