“Contract signing in West Sussex marks a milestone”

V3.co.uk has reported that the UK has reached the halfway mark of its superfast broadband rollout as West Sussex County Council agreed a GBP 20 million deal with BT. The new deal will provide 44,000 homes and businesses provided with high-speed internet connections. According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) this deal is the 22nd in a series of 44 similar projects. It is hopeful of reaching its target of completing the rollout by 2015.

Communications minister Ed Vaizey, said: “Today’s contract signing in West Sussex marks a milestone in our efforts to bring superfast broadband to those areas around the UK where it is currently unavailable. With 50 percent of projects now in delivery phase, businesses and individuals will very shortly be enjoying all the benefits that high speeds offer.”

It is however uncertain how each individual broadband rollout is progressing and how many residents are receiving superfast services. The government is investing GBP 680 million in the plan, and average speeds are said to be around 12Mbps according to Ofcom. A third party study has disputed this however and suggests that estimated average speeds are just 6.5Mbps.
