Blackpool Council has awarded  internet provider The Networking People (TNP) with a GBP 3.2 million contract to provide up to six North West local authorities and 100 public buildings such as schools and libraries with high-capacity broadband network, in keeping with the government’s Digital by Default agenda. TNP will build the wide area network and roll it out over the next six months, with the infrastructure based in Blackpool.

According to Tony Doyle, head of ICT Services at Blackpool Council: “TNP’s solution will modernise how the council delivers services to the public and it is an enabler for huge efficiencies that we can channel into other key areas.”

As part of the scheme, web-based phone systems will also be installed which will minimise phone bills for schools and councils. The framework will allow for at least six other Lancashire councils to collaborate and join the network at any time.
