Sandwell Council has launched an internet-based system called Supported Housing Independence Pathway (SHIP) that lets the homeless search for accommodation and complete applications online, and then submit to participating supported housing providers who can use the system to manage the applications. Aimed at the young, the system also lets providers keep up-to-date records of current and potential tenants, share details about available housing in real time and transfer sensitive personal information in a secure manner.

Accoridng to Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for housing: “The SHIP system is easy to operate and has an internet page that displays the contact details and locations of the participating supported housing schemes… This will give young people a chance to seek information about potential housing easily on their computers.”

Team manager Frankie Higgins is planning to show the system to Sandwell’s Mental Health Provider Forum and the council’s adult social care division and ask them if they will be interested in using it as well.
